Singleton just misses European medals

TeamBath’s Georgina Singleton just missed out on the medals at the European Judo Championships, finishing fifth.

Singleton battled her way through to a bronze medal match in the under-52kg class in Lisbon, Portugal, but went down to Romania’s Ioana-Maria Aluas Dinea, losing out to an Ippon just over three minutes into the contest.

Singleton had earlier beaten Aynur Samat of Turkey and Monika Cabaj of Poland, before going down to France’s Audrey La Rizza in her third preliminary round bout.

In the repechage, Singleton then defeated Italy’s Antonio Cuomo and Finland’s Jaana Sundberg to set up a battle for bronze.

The result means Singleton has missed out on qualification for the GB Olympic team for Beijing. Realistically she had to win gold  in Lisbon to make the Olympic team.

Juergen Klinger, TeamBath head judo coach, said: "Georgina was so professional in her preparation. It's a shame the weight was dominated by the Asian countries in the World Championships which made her job so much harder. I would like to pay tribute to the training group who have supported Georgina during this qualification period."

Mike Callan, director of judo at the University of Bath, said: "It has been a pleasure to work with Georgina at this stage in her career. She has been the consummate professional in all of her preparation, and is a fantastic role model for the younger players. She gave up a position as a maths teacher to follow her dream, and all of us here at TeamBath have the utmost respect for her commitment and dedication.

"Her career record ofEuropean, Commonwealth Games and Junior World Champion along with a 5th place in the Olympic Games is remarkable. Tribute must be paid to her coaches and colleagues at Pinewood Judo Club."

The University of Bath has one of the leading university sports departments in the UK. Under its TeamBath brand, its success is based on the expertise and dedication of staff, and its excellent facilities, used by the community and Olympic medal winners alike.
