University students in action as England thrash the USA

18 July 2009

University of Bath students Natasha Hunt, Nicola Hoole and Davinia Monteiro all played crucial roles in England rugby under-20s’ 110-0 thrashing of their USA counterparts.

The game proved to be a showcase of English rugby and a dramatic end to the Women’s Under-20s Nations Cup Campaign.

Hosted by Brunel University, England faced other U20 squads from Canada, USA and Wales over a two-week period and dominated the tournament from the beginning, winning the pool games 47-0, 42-7 & 29-3 respectively.

Two other University of Bath players, Sarah Graham and Alex Cook were also selected for the England squad but were forced to withdraw from the final due to injury.

Following USA’s win over Wales, England were drawn to face the Eagles in the final, but it took Bath’s No.8 Nicola Hoole only 13 minutes to score, which then opened the floodgates for the 18-try rampage.

Playing with the similar pride and passion for their country as they do for their University, as exhibited earlier in the year at the 26-0 beating of Loughborough in the Real Varsity Match in April, all three players made an impact upon the game.

Davinia, selected as first choice hooker, was excellent in both the tight and the loose, Natasha Hunt, having been moved from full-back to wing for the final, set-up the majority of the tries, scoring one herself, and Nicola Hoole, who’s physicality and rugby intelligence stood out throughout the tournament, scored twice.

Davinia Monteiro, Nicola Hoole, Sarah Graham & Alex Cook are all studying Sports Performance at the University of Bath whilst Natasha Hunt is a Coach Education and Sports Development student. All five students are TASS scholars and play for the BUCS team on Wednesday afternoon as well as for the University Link Club, Bath Rugby Ladies.

The University of Bath has one of the leading university sports departments in the UK. Under its Team Bath brand, its success is based on the expertise and dedication of staff, and its excellent facilities, used by the community and Olympic medal winners alike.
