World University Games get underway

The University of Bath will be represented across a wide range of sports at the World University Games, which get underway in Belgrade today (Wednesday).

University of Bath students make up more than half of the British judo team at the Games. Gemma Gibbons, Kate Walker, Jan Gosiewski, Tom Reed and Andy Burns are members of the seven-strong GB judo team in Belgrade. Darren Warner is team manager.

Swimmer Matt Clay, a Business Administration student, is a member of the British swim team at the Games.

Grace McCatty and Lauren Wells feature in the GB women’s football squad with Gary Warren and graduate Matt Townley in the men’s squad. Ryan Coombs, who works as in the performance analysis unit at the University of Bath’s Sports Department, is sports scientist with the women’s team and Andy Hibbert, senior teaching fellow, is team manager for the men.

Two of TeamBath’s tennis coaches are with the GB team in Belgrade – James Andell is team manager and Eve Langley is team coach.

The British team is competing in 11 of the 14 sports in Belgrade.

Great Britain doesn’t have a team in the athletics, but Jo Patterson runs the 400m and the 4×400m for Ireland.

The World University Games run from 1-12 July, featuring thousands of athletes from around 140 countries.

The University of Bath has one of the leading university sports departments in the UK. Under its TeamBath brand, its success is based on the expertise and dedication of staff, and its excellent facilities, used by the community and Olympic medal winners alike.
