World champs bronze for Pickering

University of Bath-based Craig Pickering returns home from the World Championships in Berlin with a bronze relay medal, despite not running at the championships.

The British 4×100m relay quartet of Simeon Williamson, Tyrone Edgar, Marlon Devonish and Henry Aikenes Aryeetey steered GB to third place in Berlin behind Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago in Saturday’s final.

Although University of Bath Sport and Exercise Science graduate Pickering didn’t run in the heats or final, he collected a medal as a member of the GB relay squad for the championships.

Fellow University of Bath-based athlete Dai Greene produced some impressive performances on his world championships debut, setting a personal best and finishing seventh in the 400m hurdles final.

The 23-year-old is coached by Malcolm Arnold, the UKA national event coach for hurdles, at the Sports Training Village. He won his 400m hurdles heat to book a place in the semi-final and then finished runner-up in his semi in a pb of 48.27 to go through to the final, where he came seventh.

“I think I just ran out of steam there at the end. At the 200 metre mark I usually kick on, I just didn’t really have it in my legs,” he said. “I came here with the intention of making the final, but obviously my expectations were raised after the semi-final.

“I’ve got high expectations of myself for the future. I thoroughly believe I can go faster and get close to that British record. I’ve just got to keep training hard and I am sure it will come.”

Fellow Briton Rhys Williams, who like Pickering and Greene is also coached by Arnold at the University, missed out on the semis, coming fifth in his 400m hurdles heat.

University of Bath French and Politics graduate Marilyn Okoro came eighth in the 800m final, after finishing third in her heat and then second in her semi.

“I tried – I was in the final – I was dying to be in the final. It’s been something I’ve wanted for a long time and I wanted to give it my best shot. Unfortunately it wasn’t good enough this year but it’s a massive stepping stone.

Meanwhile University of Bath Civil Engineering graduate James Brewer just missed out on a place in the 1500m final on his world championships debut.

The 21-year-old, who was a late addition to the GB squad for the championships, ran a pb of 3:37.17 to finished third in his heat and go through to the semis. He ran a 10th of a second slower to finish sixth in his semi – one place away from a place in the final.
