Buccs win one and draw one in opening weekend of indoor campaign

Team Bath Buccaneers men’s indoor squad won one and drew one in the opening weekend of their England Hockey National Indoor Division 1 campaign.

In their first fixture Buccs faced Stourport, the only team to have defeated them in the outdoor league this season.

Buccs started slowly and trailed at the break 4-2 but recovered well to win the game 8-4. Tim Davenport starred with six goals, with Andy Machin and Richard Bendry contributing a goal each.

Second up, the Buccaneers faced Maidstone and despite starting well, again they found themselves trailing before pulling a goal back to level it at the break.

Neither side could establish a lead greater than one goal and Buccs found themselves 5-4 down with less than a minute on the clock.

With a defeat looming, Chris Cargo produced a superb finish from a tight angle to bring Buccs level at 5-5. In the closing seconds Buccs could have won the game but Tim Davenport failed to convert after some great work from Buccs captain Phil Ball.

This weekend Buccs have their six remaining fixtures in the division, with four on Saturday beginning with Canterbury, currently the favourites to win the league. Having dropped points against Maidstone, Buccs will need to produce some good results at the weekend if they are to achieve their target of promotion to the top tier of domestic indoor hockey.

Buccs are third in the table, with Bowdon and Canterbury the only teams to have their 100 per cent records intact.
