University team edged out of varsity fixture

14 November 2011

The University of Bath men’s first XV were unlucky to go down 16-14 to their Exeter counterparts in the south west varsity game on Wednesday.

The University of Bath team were 11-5 up at half-time courtesy of a pair of Zak Vinnicombe penalties and a try from Chemistry student Will Skuse just before the interval.

Exeter then went ahead through three penalties and a try of their own to open up a five-point advantage. Vinnicombe, a Sport and Exercise Science student, reduced the deficit with a drop goal and the University of Bath team then piled on the pressure to try to secure victory.

But they couldn’t convert their pressure into further points, which mean they suffered their first British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Premier South A defeat of the season. The University of Bath continue to top the table with four wins from five games.

They return to action on Wednesday 23 November with a home game against Swansea University.

The University of Bath team wore black armbands for the match as a mark of respect for former team captain Jonathan Skofic, who passed away recently at the age of just 52.
