Scott and Beth win under-18 national tennis championships

26 August 2012

Team Bath-MCTA tennis players scored a double success on Saturday with Scott Clayton and Beth Askew winning their respective singles titles at the Under-18 Junior National Championships.

Clayton’s fighting spirit was very much in evidence as he came from a set down to beat Josh Sapwell 2-6 6-4 6-3 in a high quality final.

Scott ClaytonHis success gives Team Bath-MCTA players a hat-trick of successive singles victories at the championships following Rich Gabb’s victory in 2010 and Toby Martin’s triumph last year.

Clayton had victories over Bath players Toby Mitchell and Callum Polland-Smith during the championships.

Askew put the disappointment of losing last year’s final behind her with a 3-6 6-2 6-3 victory over Bath access player Lissie Barnet in the final.

Beth AskewAskew becomes Bath’s first female under-18 national champion. En route she beat another Bath player, Bridget Folland in the semi-final.

Access player from Millfield, Finn Bass, won the U12 Nationals with David Fox and Callum losing a close U18 doubles final in a third set tie-break.

Dave Sammel, Head Coach of the Team Bath MCTA Academy said: “These results are a reward for the hard work and dedication of the whole team. The philosophy of coaches working as a team with players allows a flexibility in the way players learn and travel which is an advantage that is growing over time.”
