Varey takes bronze in Sweden

29 October 2012

Team Bath judo player Gregg Varey collected a bronze medal at the European Cup competition in Sweden at the weekend.

The 24-year-old University of Bath Sports Performance graduate finished third in the under-60kg class in the competition at Boras.

Varey lost his opening round fight against France’s Thomas Cadoux-Duc, who went on to take gold.

But Varey battled back in the repechage, beating two Polish opponents before defeating Sweden’s Alexander Lundqvist in the battle for bronze.

Varey’s performance in Sweden followed silver in the European Cup at Tampere in Finland last month.

Meanwhile three Team Bath judoka represented Great Britain at the World Team Championships at Salvador in Brazil.

Megan Fletcher represented GB at under-70kg in the women’s competition, while Tom Reed went at under-81kg and Andy Burns at under-90kg in the men’s event.

Both British teams lost out to teams that went on to win medals. GB went down to Japan in the opening round of the women’s competition – Japan went on to win gold. Fletcher was the only member of the GB team who won her fight.

The GB men suffered an opening round defeat at the hands of eventual bronze medallists Georgia.
