Rowing trio are honoured

29 December 2012

Athletes with strong University of Bath links had their London 2012 successes recognised in the New Year’s Honours List, which was announced this morning (Saturday).

Rowers Heather Stanning, Helen Glover and Dave Smith were made MBEs in the list.

Stanning, a University of Bath Sports Technology graduate, and Glover, teamed up to win Britain’s first gold medal of the London 2012 Olympics and became the first ever GB women’s crew to win Olympic rowing gold.

Stanning and Glover learned to row at the University of Bath on the GB Rowing Team’s Start programme and went on to win Olympic gold in the women’s pair.

Stanning said:  “I am extremely proud and honoured to be awarded an MBE. After an amazing year this really is the perfect end.  I can’t thank the public, the Army, my family and of course all the team at GB Rowing, enough for all the support they have given to me in 2012.

“Now I am looking forward to 2013 and my planned deployment to Afghanistan, which I know will be as challenging and rewarding as everything I achieved in 2012.”

Glover added:  “I feel very honoured to receive this as it is the perfect end to an amazing year.  To have people think that my achievement is worthy of this is incredible.”

And there was also an MBE for another rower Dave Smith, who was a member of Britain’s gold medal winning LTA mixed coxed four crew at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Smith is a University of Bath Sports Performance graduate.
