Bath pair impress as GB tennis team take bronze

04 December 2013

University of Bath students Steph Cornish and Alex Walker helped the British team take bronze at the Master-U BNP Paribas University International in France.

Great Britain, with Team Bath MCTA Tennis Academy Director of Tennis Barry Scollo as team manager, came third among the eight nations behind winners the USA and second placed Russia.

Sports Performance student Walker and Economics student Cornish both impressed as Great Britain beat the host nation 4-2 in the bronze medal match, with Walker winning her women’s singles tie and the University of Bath pair teaming up to take the women’s doubles.

Earlier in Aix-en-Provence, unseeded Great Britain despatched Germany, seeded two, in their opening tie 4-3, coming back from 3-1 down with Walker and Darren Walsh (Southern Methodist University) winning the decisive mixed doubles rubber.

But the GB team missed out on a place in the final after going down to number four seeds Russia in their semi-final.

Scollo said: “It was great to get bronze in such a prestigious event. The whole team showed great commitment and spirit throughout. Steph and Alex put in some excellent performances especially on the last day against France.”

Team coach Alistair Higham added: “We had a great team spirit and this achievement is another sign of the growing success and importance of GB university tennis.”
