Amelia selected for Youth Olympics

09 July 2014

University of Bath-based swimmer Amelia Maughan says is excited to be selected to represent Great Britain at this summer’s Youth Olympic Games in China.

The 18-year-old, who trains at British Swimming’s National Training Centre, Bath, was today (Wednesday) named in Team GB’s 33-strong team for the Games.

The event runs from 16 to 28 August in Nanjing and will see 3600 young athletes from more than 200 countries compete across 14 sports.

“I’m really looking forward to being part of such a big multi-sport event,” she said.

“There are going to be thousands of athletes at Nanjing 2014 so it’s incredible opportunity to experience life in an Athlete’s Village and what competing at an Olympics would be like.”

Maughan will also get the opportunity to experience a multi-sport Games when she represents Team England at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games later this month.

Meanwhile, University of Bath Coach Education and Sports Development graduate Laura Gomersall will be team leader for the British modern pentathlon team at the Games. Gomersall is currently head of modern pentathlon at Whitgift School in South Croydon.
