Gold and Games record for teenager O’Connor

27 July 2014

Teenager Siobhan-Marie O’Connor produced stunning performance to strike gold in the women’s 200m individual medley on day four of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games tonight (Sunday).

O’Connor, who trains at British Swimming’s National Training Centre at the University of Bath, led from the start and her time of 2:08.21 was both a British record and a Commonwealth Games record.

It means the 18-year-old has now won a gold, three silvers and a bronze at the Games and has won medals on each day of the Games to date.

She became the fourth athlete based at the University of Bath to win gold at the Games.

“It was a good race,” she said. “I knew it was going to be hard even to get a medal because of the strength of people in the final.”

Sophie Allen, also representing England and a training partner of O’Connor at the Bath National Training Centre, came home in sixth.

Chris Walker-Hebborn just missed out on winning his third medal of the Games when he came fourth in the 50m backstroke.
