Fresher Fiona relishing Scotland chance

10 October 2014

University of Bath fresher Fiona Burnet is hoping to make her senior hockey debut for Scotland in the forthcoming three-game series against Germany.

Fiona, originally from Helensburgh near Glasgow, has just started studying for a Politics with International Relations degree at the University of Bath.

Formerly with Glasgow side Clydesdale Western, she now combines studying with hockey training and playing for Team Bath Buccaneers and the University of Bath hockey teams.

Fiona featured for the Scotland under-21 team at the EuroHockey Junior Championships II in Vienna this summer.

On target

Shortly before arriving in Bath, Scotland head coach Gordon Shepherd named her in his 18-strong Scotland squad to face world number seven team Germany in Moers on 13, 15 and 16 October. The first of those games comes just days after Fiona celebrates her 18th birthday.

Fiona has already been on target for her new club side, Team Bath Buccaneers – scoring on her debut in the 4-2 win over Lydney in the West of England Women’s League Premier Division fixture.

“It was really exciting to be selected for the squad against Germany,” said Fiona. “I’m hoping to get some game time there.”

And she’s already settled into Bath. “I’m really enjoying it. We’ve got some friends in Bath so I’ve been here a few times before. I know the course and the sport here are really good.”

Fiona’s older sister Anna also has links to the University – she is a British Sailing Team’s podium potential squad athlete and partners University of Bath Sports Performance graduate Flora Stewart in one of Britain’s 470 class boats.

The pair recently finished 14th at the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Santander, Spain.
