Bath athletes feature on award shortlists

Talented young Bath-based swimmer Siobhan-Marie O’Connor said she was excited to be named on the shortlist for the Sunday Times and Sky Sports Young Sportswoman of the Year Award.

The 18-year-old won six medals, including a gold, representing England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

O’Connor, who trains at British Swimming’s National Training Centre Bath is currently in Japan for the World Cup Series, but tweeted  “Really excited to be nominated for young sportswoman of the year!”

She is on a four-strong shortlist for the Young Sportswoman award.

A number of other athletes with Bath links featured on the shortlists for the Sportswomen of the Year Awards.

Bath-based Lizzy Yarnold, who won skeleton gold at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games, is on a shortlist of six for the Sportswoman of the Year award.

Team award shortlist

London 2012 Olympic rowing gold medallists Heather Stanning and Helen Glover are on a shortlist of four for the Team of the Year award after winning gold in the women’s pair at the World Championships in Amsterdam in August.  Stanning is a Sports Technology graduate and the pair learned to row on the Start programme at the University of Bath and at Minerva Bath Rowing Club.

There is also a place on the Disability Sportswoman shortlist for University of Bath graduate Kelly Gallagher and her skiing guide Charlotte Evans. They struck gold for Great Britain in the visually-impaired Alpine Skiing Super G event at the Sochi Paralympic Winter Games.
The winners will be announced on Wednesday 19 November.
