Golden hat-trick for Jazz Carlin as Bath swimmers end British Championships on a high

19 April 2015

Jazz Carlin completed a hat-trick of titles when she beat Bath National Performance Centre Siobhan-Marie O’Connor to the 200m freestyle title at the British Swimming Championships on Saturday.

Lizzie Simmonds, pictured, also won her second backstroke gold of what has been an impressive week for University of Bath-based swimmers.

Carlin set a new Welsh record of 1:56.88 as the 400m and 800m freestyle champion beat defending champion O’Connor, who took silver in 1:57.24.

“It’s so good to get on the podium with Siobhan because we train together day in, day out so it’s really nice for us to share that moment,” said Carlin, who is coached by Dave McNulty and Graeme Antwhistle.

“I was pretty nervous beforehand I knew it was going to be a tough race.

“It been an up and down five days and there’s been a lot of emotions, but obviously I’m really happy to end it with a best time and I get to enjoy a few days off now.”

Keynsham Swimming Club’s Amelia Maughan, who also trains at the university, was eighth in 1:30.72.

Simmonds, fresh from winning the 100m backstroke title on Wednesday, added the 200m crown in a time of 2:08.38.

“I would like to have gone a little quicker but it was all about getting myself in a good position this week and building from there,” she said.

“Knowing that I’m capable of going faster is a great sign for the summer. I’m looking forward to a few days of resting now and then I can keep training and regroup.”

Calum Jarvis doubled his medal tally for the week when he won men’s 200m freestyle bronze in 1:20.22 behind Millfield’s James Guy. University of Bath swimmer Lewis Coleman was eighth in 1:23.22

There were medals on every night of the championships, with Jemma Lowe and O’Connor winning silver and bronze respectively in the 100m butterfly on Friday.

University of Bath swimmers will return to training at the new London 2012 Legacy Pool at the Sports Training Village when it reopens this week
