Early taster of Rio 2016 Olympic Games as Pentathlon GB squad head to Brazil World Cup

07 March 2016

University of Bath students Joe Choong and Tom Toolis are part of an eight-strong Pentathlon GB squad flying out to Brazil this week to compete in a Rio 2016 Olympic Games test event.

The second UIPM World Cup of the season, taking place from March 10-13, is being staged at all of the venues being used for this summer’s Games – the Youth Arena, Deodoro Aquatics Centre and Deodoro Stadium.

Athletes will also experience the adjusted competition schedule which will be used during the Olympics, with the fencing ranking round taking place the day before the swimming, riding and combined run/shoot.

Joining Choong and Toolis, who study Mathematics and Sport Performance respectively, in the men’s squad are Jamie Cooke and Politics & International Relations graduate Sam Curry.

London 2012 silver-medallist Samantha Murray is one of three University of Bath graduates in the women’s squad, along with Kate French and Freyja Prentice (pictured above). World Junior Champion Francesca Summers also gets another chance to gain valuable international experience.

Murray, French and Choong have already qualified Olympic quota places for GB, with more ranking points available at this week’s competition.

French is the latest University of Bath-based athlete to feature in the Bath Chronicle’s Rio 2016 column, where she talks about her upcoming trip to Brazil. Click here to read the full story.
