Alicia Barnett is a Wimbledon quarter-finalist as Team Bath Tennis ace and Jonny O’Mara enjoy memorable win over Jamie Murray and Venus Williams

03 July 2022

Alicia Barnett is through to the Wimbledon mixed doubles quarter-finals after the Team Bath Tennis ace and partner Jonny O’Mara beat Jamie Murray and Venus Williams in a three-set rollercoaster on Sunday.

A wonderfully entertaining encounter on Court 2 saw Barnett and O’Mara, who had beaten 2021 US Open finalists Marcelo Arevalo and Giuliana Olmos 6-2 3-6 7-5 in the first round, save five match points during a dramatic final-set tie-break before sealing a memorable 3-6 6-4 7-6(18-16) success.

Murray and Williams, who have seven mixed doubles Grand Slam titles between them, won the first set and were 4-2 up in the second before Barnett and O’Mara put together a run of four straight games to level the match.

They were again a break down in the decisive set but struck back to take it to a tie-break, which proved to be a real rollercoaster as both partnerships had five chances to win the match.

Eventually it was Barnett – coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village – and O’Mara who managed to come through amid an electric atmosphere and take their place in the last eight.
