Scholarships 2012/13

Bill Whiteley Scholarship

Mr William Whiteley a graduate of the University of Bath has agreed to donate a sum of money to the University in order to support one student each year throughout the duration of their degree programme. This student must be academically able, who also has outstanding sporting potential.

Students must be accepted on a full time under-graduate degree of at least three years duration in the school of Management, Faculty of Engineering and Design or the Department of Economics and must be able to make a positive impact on the University’s Sports Standing.

Alex WildingAlex Wilding (Rowing)

Alex is a first year student studying Mechanical Engineering, who represented GB Juniors at the World Championships in 2011.

His aim this year is to make the U23 squad and in the future to break into the Senior squad with the ultimate goal being selected for the 2016 Olympics.

The Trendell Sports Scholarships

The Trendell Sports Scholarships will be awarded annually on a competitive basis to sporting students who have elite performance potential in one of our priority sports, as well as able to contribute to BUCS points.

Gemma HowellGemma Howell (Judo)

Gemma is a first year student on the Sports and Exercise Science programme who finished seventh in the 2010 World Championships. As well as winning medals at Junior Worlds and at European level Gemma went on to represent GB at the London Olympics.

Her main focus whilst at Bath will be to qualify for the 2016 Olympics, whilst improving her place at the World Championships and on the International scene in the build up.

Angharad James (Women’s Football)

Angharad is a first year student who will be studying on the Sport and Social Science programme. She has represented and captained Wales at all junior levels, and currently has 10 Senior Welsh International caps, as well as being part of the Arsenal and Bristol Academies.

George FarrantGeorge Farrant (Hockey)

George is a Sports Performance student. He plays for the England U21 men and has been competing in the Great Britain SuperLeague.  He captained several games for the England U21 men including wins over Scotland and Malaysia.

George is back in training at Bath captaining the University Men’s 1st Team and also playing for Team Bath Buccaneers at the weekend.

He gained selection for the Junior European squad end of August 2012.

Panuga Riou (Badminton)

Panuga Riou - badminton playerPanga is a Coach Education and Sports Development student. She had great success at the Commonwealth Youth Games, as singles and bronze medalist in 2008.

Pangua’s major international achievements include U17 6 Nations Singles winner, Welsh International EBU Singles semi finals 2008, U19 Langenfeld 2008 Singles winner, U19 Danish Cup 2009 Doubles winner, Commonwealth Youth games 2008 Singles bronze medalist.

Panuga was the youngest member of the England women’s team picked to contest badminton’s European Team Championships in February 2012, making a quarter final exit.

Yasmin Parsons (Netball)

Yasmin ParsonsYasmin is a Coach Education and Sports Development student.

Captaining the U19 England squad to victory in the European Championships, and also receiving player of the tournament, Yasmin has also gone on to tour both Australia and Jamaica with the England U19 Squad and has made her debut with the Team Bath Super League team in 2010.

Yasmin made her senior international debut in May 2012 as England retained the Netball Europe Open trophy with a 66-42 victory over Scotland.

She was named in the Great Britain team to compete at the World University Netball Championships and celebrated helping Great Britain to victory in a closely contested final as Great Britain beat host nation South Africa 53-49 in Cape Town.

Mia RitchieMia Ritchie (Netball)

Mia is a third year Sports Performance Student and a current Team Bath Fiat Netball Superleague and University player.

Mia celebrated helping Great Britain to victory at the inaugural World University Netball Championships; she featured in a closely contested final as Great Britain beat host nation South Africa 53-49 in Cape Town.

She was also a member of the University of Bath team that won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships in 2012 for the first time for four years

Rosie AllisonRosie Allison (Netball)

Rosie is a Biology student. She won the Santander Sportswoman of the Year awards at the annual Blues Award ceremony in May 2011 and was a member of the Team Bath Netball Superleague squad in 2010 and 2011.

In 2010 she helped the England team to comprehensive victories in the European Netball Under-19 and Under-17 competitions; she played a key role in England under-19s’ victory in Loughborough. The national team beat Malta 88-11, Northern Ireland 81-12, Scotland 71-19 and Wales 60-17.

Rosie has been playing netball in New Zealand all year.  Since returning she has already made England Senior Selection for the England Vs Jamacia Series which they one 2-1.

Anne ReesAnne Rees (Athletics)

Anne is a second year Sports & Exercise Science student.

Medalling at all major National Championships in 2011, second at Indoor, third Outdoor U20’s Championships and Nationally ranked fourth U20.

Anne looks to continue her athletics representing the University at the BUCS Championships and making the top 10 in her first year of senior competitions.

Santander Sports Scholarship

Photo: Steve Ballinger, MatchtightThe Santander Sports Scholarships are available for students who are studying at the University of Bath from the UK, Iberamerican or Iberian Peninsular countries who have the ability to become of have the current status as an elite International athlete.

Samantha Murray (Modern Pentathlon)

Samantha will be entering her fourth year of her French and Politics degree as Olympic Silver medallist, World Bonze medallist winner, and a World Ranking of third with her ultimate aim to win gold at the 2016 Olympics.

Katie Tomsett (Sailing)

Katie TomsettKatie a first year student on the Sport and Social Science Programme is a sailor on the Skandia British Sailing team- Olympic Development Programme.

In 2011 she finished fourth in the Junior World Championships and eighth in the Junior European Championships.

Her focus this year is to secure a place in the Olympic Performance programme an important milestone in her qualification for the 2016 Olympics.

Rachel Smith (Rhythmic Gymnastics)

After captaining the first Rhythmic Gymnastics team to an Olympics, Rachel has returned to her studies, and will be studying the Sports Performance Programme this year.Rachel Smith

She hopes to continue her training to qualify for a place at the World University Games in 2013 and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Dominic Parsons (Skeleton)

Dominic will be in his first year of a PhD in Mechanical Engineering as he turns his attention to qualification for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

He is part of the Olympic Development Programme and has represented GB at European and World level as well as achieving a 1st degree in engineering.

Fraizer Christie (Rowing)

Frazier ChristieFrazier is a member of the GB Rowing Start Programme and is currently in the top 20 GB U23’s, finishing 10th in the GB trials for the U23 World Championships Quadruple Scull.

Combining his sport with his Economics degree he looks to secure his place in the GB U23 squad this year and for a future in the Senior GB squad

Kirsten McAslan (Athletics)

Kirsten will be a first year onto the Biochemistry programme as well as being ranked number 1 in Great Britain in the U20’s for the 400m.

Kirstan McAslanRepresenting GB Juniors she attended the Loughborough International in 2012, as well as being part of the gold medal winning relay squad at the Junior Europeans in 2011.

Her aim this year is to progress into the GB U23 team and secure a place at the Commonwealth Games for Scotland.

Ben Mackey (Hockey)

Ben has achieved over 40 Junior International caps and has been capped at England U21 and will look to continue his development whilst studying on the Sports Performance Programme, with the goal to achieve his status in the GB Senior team.Tom Vaughan-Edwards

Tom Vaughan- Edwards (Rugby)

Entering the University on the Biochemistry degree programme, Tom has represented England U19’s as well as being part of the Bath Academy.

His aim to play professional rugby at the highest level.

Jan Gosiewski (Judo)

As a graduate of the University of Bath, Jan looks to return to his studies to study MSc Engineering Design.

Jan has been a senior International for a number of years representing Great Britain at European Cups as well as finishing seventh Jan Gosiewskiat the World University Championships in 2011.

Jan looks to medal at the World University Games in 2014 as well as medal regularly on the European and World stages.

Samuel Hatherly (Hockey)

As a Sports Performance student, Sam has represented England U18 on a regular basis, winning a gold medal at the 2012 Four Nations Tournament.

Chris Hay (Fencing)

Chris HayChris is a Biology student. He has been a member of the GBR under 20 Men’s Epee Squad for the last four years competing in World Cup A grade competitions and has also competed at European and World championship competitions in his respective age groups.

Whilst studying Biology at the University of Bath he hopes to continue to hold his place within the International Squad aiming for the European and World Championships in 2012.

Inigo Balbin (Rugby)

Inigo is a Mechanical Engineering student.

As a player for the Spanish under 18’s, and nominated for the best Spanish player in 2008, 2010, Inigo has been part of the Bayonne and Leicester Tigers Academies turning down a year trial with Tigers to focus on his education and he is hoping to contribute to the University Rugby Team alongside his Mechanical Engineering degree whilst working towards his long term goals of Rio 2016 7’s, and securing a place within a professional set up.

Tajiv Masson (Rugby)

Tajiv is a Civil Engineering student.

After playing over 50 games for Harlequins, and England U21 representation Tajiv has chosen to return to education to study Civil Engineering, whilst working towards his development as a recognised English Centre and helping the Team Bath side to be successful.

Steve Cappleman (Badminton)

Steve is an Economics student. Ranked number two, for the England U18 singles, and no. one for the U18 men’s doubles, Steven has represented England on a number of occasions.

Alongside his Economics degree Steven looks to continue his progression and make it into the top five European players for his age group as well as looking to medal at European Juniors. He will also hope to compete at the World Junior Championships this year.

Santander Bath ITC Scholarship

In 2012 a new Swimming specific Scholarship to support new ITC Swimmers who study at the University was created to help them progress their joint pursuit of academic and swimming excellence at Bath.

Anne BochmannThe Santander Bath ITC Scholarship award is open to talented new Bath ITC Swimmers who are studying at the University and who are not in receipt of any direct funding through the World Class Programme Athlete Personal Award or a Team Bath High Performance Scholarship Programme Award.

Anne Bochmann

Starting at the University of Bath this year on the MPharmacy course, Ann will hope to build on her successful performances as a junior international and narrowly missing out on a medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, targeting the World Championships in 2013 and Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Michael will be progressing into his final year of the Sports Performance course after returning home from the London 2012 Olympics with a silver medal and new British Record in the 200m breaststroke, and looks to qualify for the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Scotland.

Calum Jarvis

As the current British Champion for the 200m backstroke narrowly missing Olympic Qualification, Calum looks to break into the British Swimming Squad along side completing his final year of the Sports Performance degree.

Hayley Towner

Representing Great Britain at the European Short Course Championships this year whilst in her first year of the Sports Performance degree, before suffering from illness, Hayley looks to regain her fitness and qualify for the World Championships in 2013 and Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Andrew WillisAndrew Willis

After qualifying for the final of the 200m breaststroke at the London Olympics, bettering his own English Record, Andrew returns back to his studies in Chemical Engineering with the future aspirations of competing internationally representing Great Britain at major meets.

Richard Butler

Richard is part of the Intensive Training Centre at the University of Bath, where he combines his training for swimming alongside his Chemical Engineering degree has future aspirations to compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016 Olympic Games.

Chris Allen Scholarship

The Chris Allen Sports Scholarship is for academically able students, who also have considerable potential as a player in one of a number of specified team sports. Students must be a “Home Students” on a full time undergraduate degree programme with two grade A’s and one B at A level.

Please note that from 2012 this scholarship is not available for application.

Joshua GuyJoshua Guy (Hockey)

Joshua is a strong academic second year Economics student. As a hockey player he has been members of both the U16 and U18 England Teams, and is a member of the Bowdon 1st Team squad which as part of the National League and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the European Hockey League.

Josh aims to establish himself as a full member of the University 1st team as well as Bath Buccaneers and hopes to re-gain his place in the England set-up.
