In light of the Blues Awards last Wednesday, this has been a truly fantastic year for British sport in general, as well as a fantastic year for Students’ Union Sport.

We saw a home Olympics and Paralympics for the first time in 64 years, with many Bath based athletes featuring and indeed succeeding on the International stage. Within the SU, we also end the year with a National Championship winning Tennis Team for the second year in a row.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all of the club committees, staff and everyone else who I have worked with throughout the year. In particular, I would like to extend my gratitude to The Sports Department, Office Staff, as well as the Executive Committee – who in my opinion, have been one of the most functional committees for many a year. Without everyone’s hard work and dedication, the success we have witnessed this year simply would not have been possible.

I am confident that next year will prove to be even better for sport here at the University, as in Tom Janicot there is an individual who will work tirelessly to give each and every club the opportunities that they deserve.

Team Bath judo player Emmanuel Nartey dedicated his first African Championships medal to the memory of his father, who died 10 years ago.

The Ghanaian London 2012 Olympian won bronze in the under-73kg class at the championships in Maputo, Mozambique.

“It was emotional week for me, but I got there in the end,” he said, who won his medal on Friday, the day after his 30th birthday.

Nartey won his opening two preliminary round contests before losing to Tunisia’s Ragheb Karchoud. But he fought back strongly, winning his next three bouts, including a victory over Gabon’s Terrence Junior Kouamba Poutoukou in the battle for bronze.

Nartey made a piece of history at London 2012 when he became the first Ghanaian judo player to compete at an Olympic Games.

You can win a copy of Nartey’s autobiography, My Olympic Dream in a competition on the Team Bath website.

The closing date for entries is 14 May.

The weekend started off in fantastic style as our Men’s Floorball Team claimed the University Championship, beating Imperial 5-4 in the semi-final and keeping a first clean sheet of the season when it mattered by beating Aberdeen 5-0 in the final to claim the cup.

The week also saw a variety of other champions as well.

Sports Science, who I have proudly played for this year, claimed the inaugural IDFC Division two title to earn promotion to the first division, beating BUMS 2-1 in the deciding match of the season.

The last week also saw the BUCS Trophy and Championship finals take place on the Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
