The Beechen Cliff School of Excellence
![]()
This is a partnership between Beechen Cliff School and the University of Bath (Team Bath).
The hockey School of Excellence was launched in September 06 with around ten athletes taking part.
For 2008/9 the School of Excellence will be open to all Beechen Cliff students above year 7 with the potential to perform at a high level plus an increased number of places for full or part time students from other schools.
The Lead Hockey Coach is Phil Ball is Team Bath Buccaneers 1st team player. He work’s closely with University of Bath Head Coach and South African International, Jody Paul.
The new programme is flexible to each players needs, within four afternoon 3.30 - 5.00pm sessions per week over all three school terms. All sessions are held at the Universities Sports Training Village.
The School of Excellence liaises with local clubs to provide opportunities for the right level of playing experience in a club environment and ensuring the right balance between playing, training and rest. The University, School and Team Bath Buccaneers have a three way partnership agreement, involving all age groups, which greatly assists this aspect of the programme but membership of clubs is entirely the choice of students.
The aim of the School of Excellence is to provide the opportunity for students to maximise their hockey potential with a view to giving them the best possible foundation for successful hockey careers at the highest levels of the game. The school of excellence will seek to work closely with England Hockey’s “Standard Pathway” and representative structures and individual pathways will be identified into higher education and/or the hockey world, including opportunities at the University of Bath. Last season very many of the players achieved representative honours with one winning the Buccaneers Junior Player of the Year Award.
The University of Bath also provide three Team Bath Hockey Coaches to assist with coaching all the school teams.
Candidates wishing only to attend the School of Excellence as an associate member will need to contact Nick Kendall (see below). Flexible Programmes can be offered ranging from one hour a week to the full programme. Costs can be advised/agreed on request.
We are delighted to offer places to students from all the local schools who have high hockey potential and would benefit from additional coaching from our School of Excellence coach, Phil Ball. Maybe just one session a week would suit. Any enquires to be directed to:
