St Stephens Take the Division 1 Title for First Time
Division 1 of the Savills Junior Hockey League reached an exciting climax on Sunday.
With three teams level on points at the start of the day the matches between them would decide the title. All the matches were tight affairs with the hosts and holders, Team Bath Buccaneers, being held to a 1-1 draw by City of Bath and then downed by a skilful and committed St Stephens 0-1 with Captain Harry Potter grabbing the winner with a terrific reverse stick shot.
St Stephens then held firm against City of Bath to take the title with a 2-1 win. City’s goal was enough to give them the runners up spot on goal difference.
This is the first time the school team under coach Sally Potter have taken the title having been runners up on goal difference only last season. They will be looking for double success in the Cup on 26 April.
In Division 3, newcomers All Hallows Buccaneers made a strong start with three wins and will take on leaders Newbridge for the title next week.
Savills Junior Hockey Cup & Plate Sunday 27 April 2008
The Savills Junior Hockey season came to an exciting close on Sunday when U-11 Mixed 7-a-side teams competed for in both the Cup and Plate competitions at the The University of Bath Sports Training Village.
The six Savills League First Division sides competed for the Cup in a round robin format producing some remarkably high standard matches. League champions Team Bath Buccaneers were seeking a second successive double and got off to a cracking start with an 8-0 win over Yate Sharks. St Stephens who conceded the league on goal difference only also looked strong but were held by the Buccaneers second string Admirals in a thrilling 2-2 draw. This left the home club clear to win all their remaining matches and scoop the title and the runners up spot.
16 teams contested the Plate with last years winners St Michaels A looking to defend their title. All the groups were closely contested with the four group winners emerging for the semi finals.
Newbridge A playing in the event for the first time proved too strong for the holders St Michaels A with a 4-0 win but the other semi was a close fought end to end affair with St Stephens A edging out Team Bath Buccaneers’ Cadets 1-0.
Another close match followed in the Final with St Stephens again scoring the only goal to see off the Newbridge challenge.
The trophies were presented by David Mackenzie of Savills who says “Savills are delighted to be able to support junior hockey in the area and are delighted to see so many players and parents enjoying a great day out.
Organiser Nick Kendall, from Team Bath Buccaneers Hockey Club, says ” we are very grateful for the support of Savills and also BANES Active Leisure in putting on both the league and cups for both U-9’s and U-11’s.
