BUSA 2008
University of Bath students were in emphatic form as they dominated the weekend’s British Univerities Sports Association (BUSA) Judo Championships.
The University of Bath broke their record for the number of individual medals won and retained the Men’s and Women’s Team Championships and the Men’s and Women’s Regional Championships.
Competing in 213 individual and team contests over a gruelling weekend, the 33 players from Bath amassed a win/loss record of 178-34, with 11 players remaining unbeaten over the two days. There were 45 universities represented. 2007 European U23 Medallist, Tom Reed, won all 11 of his fights in a total time of 5 minutes 25 seconds.
In the black belts events (Dan grade) Bath won 10 of the 14 weight categories, the individual Dan grade gold medallists were; Gregg Varey (Sports Performance) U60k, Diego Scardone (Sports Performance) U66k, Jan Gosiewski (Medical Engineering) U73k, Tom Reed (Business Administration) U81k, Andrew Burns (Coach Education) U100k, Chalotte Farbon (Sports Performance) U52k, Kate Walker (Pharmacy) U63k, Gemma Gibbons (Sports Performance) U70k, Katrina McDonald (Education) U78k, Sian Wilson (Sports Performance) O78k.
In the intermediate classes (Kyu grade) Bath were again the top University with gold medallists Mark Comer (Mathematics) U73k, and Andrew Readman(Sports Engineering) U90k. There were three individual silver medallists; Katy Sumner (SportsPerformance) U57k Dan, Benjamin Kumpfmueller (Pharmacy) U73k Kyu, and TomFowler (Mathematics & Physics) U100k Kyu.
Seven players won individual bronze medals; Alex Paske (Chemistry) U66k Dan, Eduardo Leonardo (Sociology)U81k Dan, Emil Edmar (Sports Performance) U90k Dan, Danny Roberts (SportsPerformance) U90k Dan, Adam Hall (Sports Performance) U100k Dan, Shiobhan O’Neill (Sports Performance) U57k Dan, Sam Hawkins (Electrical & Electronic Engineering) U73k Kyu. In the Men’s Team Championships, Bath won their sixth title beating
Loughborough (50-0) and Durham (50-0) in the pool, Warwick (50-0) in theknockout stage, Imperial (50-0) in the semi-final, before facing friends andrivals Oxford in a hard fought final emerging victors 47-0. The winning team was Andrew Burns (Captain), Adam Hall, Tom Reed, Eduardo Leonardo, and Jan Gosiewski.
In the Women’s Team Championship, Bath again won their sixth title beating Manchester, Warwick and Plymouth in the pool all by the maximum 30-0 score.They defeated Oxford 30-0 in the semi-final and faced a strong University ofLondon team in the final, taking victory with a 20-0 scoreline.
The team was Sian Wilson (Captain), Gemma Gibbons, and Kate Walker. The British University Regional Team Championships allows Universities to combine their best players in a 10 man team and a 5 woman team. The SouthWest representative sides were entirely made from University of Bath reserve players.
The men beat the Northern Universities 87-0, the Midlands Universities 95-0 and the South East Universities 75-20. The women beat the Northern Universities 50-0, and the Midlands Universities 50-0. To bringboth regional championships back home to Bath.
Former World Champion and a new member of the Team Bath Coaching Team, Jane Bridge 7th Dan, said “These are very pleasing results. The players trainvery hard and it is good for them to put their training to the test at thislevel.”
Director of Sport at the University of Bath, Ged Roddy, said; “These are outstanding results, our judo team goes from strength to strength. They continue to surpass their own records and are changing the face of British University Judo.”

The University of Bath’s judo players continued their domination of the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Judo Championships with the women’s team winning their fifth successive team title and the men winning their third in a row.
Gemma Gibbons, Hannah Sinfield and captain Laura Clempner (see photo) won the women’s team title for the University of Bath, while Danny Murphy, Daniel Stanley, captain Tom Reed, Jan Gosiewski and Marcus Bascombe (see photo) won the men’s team title.
And players also won eight individual titles in the dan grade competitions at the BUSA Championships, which took place at the University of Wolverhampton.
Gold medals went to first year students Charlotte Farbon, Siobhan O’Neill, Gemma Gibbons, Brett Caswell and Tom Reed, along with second year students Marcus Bascombe, and Danny Murphy, as well as third year student Sian Wilson. It was Danny Murphy’s second successive title, while Sian’s success was her third BUSA Championship title. In the Divisional Inter-regional Championships, the South West teams, which were entirely made up of University of Bath students, won both the men’s and the women’s titles.
In total at the end of the weekend of competition the University of Bath had won four team trophies, 31 gold medals, five silvers and five bronzes, netting an outstanding 266 BUSA points for the University in the BUSA rankings.Mike Callan, Director of Judo at the University of Bath, said: “I’d like to congratulate the coaching team for their work - Roy Inman, Juergen Klinger, Norito Katabuchi, Hidemi Soda, Matt Divall, as well as national coaches Darren Warner and Kate Howey, and strength coaches Kate Eddy and Mark Spivey. “I’d particularly like to congratulate the players on the University of Bath high performance judo programme for their dedication to training which is demonstrated by these outstanding results.”
