International Association of Judo Researchers

Executive Committee of IAJRThe International Association of Judo Researchers (IAJR) was founded in Tokyo in 2006, and established as Association during the 5th International Judo Federation World Symposium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2007. It was created in order to coordinate and foster the development of Judo-related academic research and educational activities.

Our mission is: “To facilitate world peace and safety by improving international and intercultural understanding, cooperation and relationships through judo by supporting judo-related research and Judo Researcherseducation.”

Our Objectives are:

  • To create an open, transparent, and sustainable organization to achieve the above mission statement.
  • To bring Researchers together.
  • To provide researchers with opportunities for publications and presentations.
  • To improve the availability of research related sources.
  • To improve the quality of judo-related research through providing education and scholarships.
  • To encourage and support judo-related educational activities.
  • To support and facilitate judo teaching and coaching methods.
  • To work collaboratively and develop synergistic partnership with other organizations and programmes who can benefit from the resources of this organization.

Judo Performance Research and Development Centre

British Judo has entered into a new partnership with the University of Bath to launch a national British Judo Performance Research and Development Centre.

The work undertaken by the Centre will play an important part in the success of British Judo’s performance programmes and will significantly contribute to its build up to London 2012 and beyond.

A key project will be the delivery of a Fast Track Coaches Programme led by renowned French coach Patrick Roux, which will accelerate the professional development of a group of young British coaches, in order that they have the best opportunity to prepare and coach athletes in the build up to 2012 and beyond.

A collection of the papers and correspondence of Richard Bowen (1926-2005), judoka and sports historian.

Richard (Dickie) Bowen was born in Belgravia, London in 1926. In 1956 Bowen was selected to represent Britain at the 1st World Judo Championships, an open weight competition held in Japan. He subsequently spent three years training at the Kodokan in Tokyo. He also became actively involved with the British Judo Association.

Daigo visitThe collection contains a wide range of material relating to Bowen’s extensive research into the origins and history of British judo and its early exponents in preparation for a book on the subject. It includes posters, tournament and display programmes, minutes of meetings, working drafts, correspondence and photos assembled from various sources. (Photo: Mr Toshiro Daigo, Mr Dicky Bowen, Mr Nobuyuki Sato, Mr Syd Hoare).

The collection was donated to the University of Bath in January 2004 by
Mr Bowen.
