Team Bath Superleague Team vs England Netball March 2010

Netball…Regular Competitive Teams

Superleague Final GroupThree National League Clubs are either based at Bath or fed by players from the High Performance Unit.  These are: Hucclecote, TeamBath Toucans and Western Park.  There are several strong University sides in the region as well as the University of Bath itself who are current British University Sports Association champions and are the home of a thriving student club.  The regional and the top two divisions of the Avon League play their matches at the Sports Training Village.

The regions of the South and South West combined have the largest competitive player base in the country with 8,800 registered players.

There are also talented youngsters emerging at “futures level” who use the University as a training base at weekends, in the weekends, in the evenings and during school holidays.

National Netball Centre

Netball - crowd1.jpgThe University of Bath is home to one of England’s National Netball Centres and the TeamBath and University Netball Programme.  This centre is also home to the regional English Institute of Sport unit.  The University of Bath Netball Club is a strong, vibrant club, consistently top-ranking within the English University community.

The South and South West Performance Unit and the Regional office are administrated from the 3 court specialist facility in the Sports Training Village.

Pamela CookeyThe Performance programme includes full time and part time athletes, training either on site or in one of the seven Extension Centres in the two regions.  The athletes in the programme are identified talented individuals who are selected or invited to enter the National Talent programme.  A talented youth Umpire Unit will be operational in 2006.

The coaching staff includes six current or previous national and national age gr

oup coaches.  The programme involves technical development, physical conditioning and support services provision.  The athletes are expected to grow as people and complete their academic endeavours.  Contribution is made to the community through screening days, workshops and coach development activity.  The unit also provides support to schools, regional and national netball initiatives.

The South West Regional office includes a regional manager and administrator who provide leadership to the 10 counties of the South West, offering a combination of support services and coordination of education and training options.  The field based regional development officer also works from this office.

The Co-operative SuperLeague

As a key focus venue for the South and South West regions, the University of Bath is happy to play host to the Superleague.  As bronze medallists in 2003 and champions in 2004, Team Bath is proud of its record in the competition.

Bath has become a hot-bed of emerging, young England talent.
25 players who trained, or are still training here, have represented England at senior or Under 21 level since England Netball’s South West Region High Performance Centre was created.

Pamela ShootsThe Super League, played over a series of weekends, involved top franchises and features all members of the senior England squad as well as overseas and other home nations players.  This makes it the premier domestic competition - one which attracts good crowds in a family-friendly atmosphere. For the players it is also the chance to benefit from top-level competition at home before travelling to take on the might of Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, South Africa and others.

Sasha.jpgTeam Bath’s key players over the past few seasons have been talented and high-achieving people like Geva Menor, Pamela Cookey, Jess Garland, Rachel Dunn, Tamsin Greenway, Ama Agbeze, Clare Elsley, Sara Bayman, Asha Tett, Gemma Fletcher, Anna Mayes and Kathryn Rawson.  Many Team Bath players have combined playing with top level study, significant work commitments and other duties at the University.

As well as the national senior team players who are or have been attached to Team Bath, six Bath-based players participated in the England U21 side who played in the 2005 Super Cup as guests before their preparation for the World Youth Championships taking place in Florida, USA in July.

Tamsin GreenwayTamsin Greenway, 22, a media student in Bath and part time netball coach said:

“The Super League is one of the most exciting competitions for us.  It’s great to play in front of a home crowd and the standard of play is really high.  We were ecstatic when we won last year.  It was a great atmosphere.  We know it will be tough this year to defend our title but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Tamsin1.jpg“At the University we are really lucky.  The playing facilitie

s in the new Sports Training Village are truly superb.  We’ve also got all the back-up we need with a great fitness suite, excellent coaching, sports science and medical support.”

TeamBath has a reputation for providing excellence at the cutting edge.  Its franchise is looking at creative ways to develop the sport in the South and South West of England.  The franchise is also dedicated to building a fan base, selling merchandise and creating its won broadcast deals.  Watch this space and come back soon.
