Talent Development
In 2003 a new RFU National Academy of Rugby opened on the University site led by Brian Ashton. Since then the England Rugby academies have been regular visitors to the Sports Training Village, staying on site and making use of our world-class facilities, well-prepared training pitches and cutting edge sports science support.
In 2004 and 2005 Team Bath developed the concept of “The Real Varsity Match” in which the two premier student rugby clubs – Loughborough and Bath – face each other in an annual fixture.
The University of Bath high performance rugby programme was launched in 1999 to enable players to maximise their playing potential while also continuing their academic studies. The sport is closely integrated to the Foundation Degree and Coach Education and Sports Performance and other academic programmes. The high performance rugby programme is lead by Head Coach Aaron James and assisted by Rugby Coach Shaun Williams.
The University runs 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Ladies’ XVs plus two fresher teams. The 1st XV participate in the Premier League of the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) competition and also participate in the RFU National Student League. Several Team Bath players are involved with Bath Rugby and Bristol Shoguns.
