Illness robs Lyons of senior GB rowing debut

21 February 2007

Illness robbed University of Bath student Dave Lyons of his opportunity to make his senior rowing debut in Great Britain colours.

The Coach Education and Sports Development student was due to compete in one of two GB fours at last weekend’s FISA Team Cup in Seville, Spain, but a member of his crew was ill, so the boat couldn’t race.

Lyons was selected to row in a GB eight in Germany in October last year, but that time a chest infection ruled him out of the competition.

He now has his sights set on winning selection for some of this summer’s World Cup regattas.

But there was better luck in Seville for University of Bath graduate Marcus Bateman, now a member of the Leander Club. He rowed in Britain’s eight which won its races over 500m and 1000m at the FISA Team Cup.

The University of Bath has one of the leading university sports departments in the UK. Under its Team Bath brand, its success is based on the expertise and dedication of staff, and its excellent facilities, used by the community and Olympic medal winners alike.
