Medals galore for Minichiello

16 January 2009

British bobsleigh driver Nicola Minichiello has collected three World and European medals in just two days in St Moritz, Switzerland.

Minichiello collected the bronze medal in round five of the World Cup yesterday (Thursday) – a race arranged to replace the cancelled World Cup round in Italy just before Christmas.

She produced a repeat performance with another bronze in World Cup round six today at the same track. That race also doubled as the European Championships. As she was beaten by two German crews, Minichiello also collected a European bronze medal.

It’s been a terrific start to the year for Minichiello and her crew members, who do some of their training at the University of Bath – they also took silver at the Konigssee track in Germany earlier this month.

That means Minichiello has medalled at the last three World Cup races and is currently fifth overall in the World Cup 2008/9 series.

Minichiello was partnered by Jackie Gunn in yesterday’s World Cup round and by Gillian Cooke for today’s event.

The Germans dominated both events, with Sandra Kiriasis and Berit Wiacker winning both golds, and Cathleen Martini and Janine Tischer collecting both silvers.

Two further rounds of this season’s women’s bobsleigh World Cup remain.

The University of Bath has one of the leading university sports departments in the UK. Under its TeamBath brand, its success is based on the expertise and dedication of staff, and its excellent facilities, used by the community and Olympic medal winners alike.
