Team Bath badminton player Chris Coles claimed two titles at the Under-17 Nationals in Stoke-on-Trent, taking both the men’s and the mixed doubles.
Chris partnered Matthew Nottingham to victory in the men’s doubles, beating Ed Thomas and Michael Baw in the final – that pair had earlier defeated fellow TeamBath player Josh Green and his partner Phillip Aspinal in the semis.
Chris then went on to claim the mixed doubles title with partner Jess Fletcher from Yorkshire, beating Harley Clower and Sarah Milne in the final.
But Chris had to settle for bronze in the singles, losing his semi to Surrey’s Toby Penty. There was also a bronze in the singles for Josh Green, who lost his semi-final to Ed Thomas.
Both Chris and Josh are part of the ASSE programme and train daily at the badminton high performance centre at the University of Bath.
Meanwhile, at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) badminton team championships, the University of Bath ladies firsts went down to Leeds Met in the semis. The Bath team was captained by Laura Cousins, and including Mariana Agathangelou, Helen Ward, Hana Littlecott, Alison Marr and Sarah Boyce but lost 5-3 to the eventual champions, who featured three top Malaysian players.
The men’s first team of captain Ben Caldwell, Chris Hotchen, Jack Molyneux, Andrew Kidger, Iain McCormack and Jean-Paul Cosgrove beat Birmingham in the semi-final but lost out in the final to Leeds Met 7-1. The men’s 2nd team had showed a good fighting spirit throughout the season to battle their way to the trophy final but eventually went down 6-2 to Loughborough 2nds.
