Seventh for Kate and Jan

23 November 2009

University of Bath students Kate Walker and Jan Gosiewski both finished just outside the medals in seventh place at the European Under-23 Judo Championships in Turkey.

Pharmacy student Walker won the opening two contests in her pool in the women’s under-63kg class, beating Andreja Dakovic of Croatia and Ivana Komlosiova of Slovakia, before going down to Hungary’s Eszter Gaspar, who went on to win bronze.

That put Walker in the repechage, but she lost out to Poland’s Agata Ozdoba.

Gosiewski (pictured), a Medical Engineering student at the University of Bath, also won his opening two contests in the men’s under-73kg class. First he beat Yauheni Khalturyn of Belarus, before seeing off Benji Nortan of the Netherlands. That set up a contest against Petro Kuzmin, which the Ukranian won.

Gosiewski went down to Russia’s Kirill Savitskiy in the repechage to end the competition in seventh.

University of Bath Sports Performance graduate Gemma Gibbons collected a bronze in the women’s under-70kg class.
