Buccs men target indoor promotion push

12 January 2010

Team Bath Buccaneers men’s indoor squad begin their England Hockey National Indoor campaign this weekend in a weather-affected playing schedule at UWE in Bristol.

With last weekend’s postponement of the Premier Indoor League, England Hockey have reduced playing times to ensure that both the Premier League and Division 1 campaigns can run concurrently at the one venue.

Buccs will go into the indoor season with confidence from their outdoor campaign which has seen them rocket to the top of the EHL Conference West, sitting 11 points clear of their closest rivals.

The indoor season provides an opportunity to push for promotion to the Premier Division, as they are also doing outdoors.

The squad welcomes the return of two former Buccaneers who, due to England Hockey regulations, are able to opt to play for another side for the two-weekend indoor season.

Hampstead & Westminster’s David Cooper joins up with the squad having recently gained his first England senior indoor cap against Scotland and will provide a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Reading’s Chris Cargo is the other guest player. A PhD student at the University of Bath, he also brings another dimension to the squad and will surely prove an excellent signing.

Buccs start their campaign this Sunday with fixtures against Stourport and Maidstone, before having to contend with six fixtures the following weekend, including four on the Saturday.

Buccs indoor captain Phil Ball said: “We’ve probably got the strongest squad we’ve had indoors for a long time and so we’ll be looking to finish in one of those top two positions to ensure we are playing Premier League indoor next year.

“With David Cooper and Chris Cargo joining us we have two international quality players, and when you add these to the likes of Johnny Kinder, Lewis Prosser and James Bailey, our squad certainly on paper looks like one that should be pushing for promotion.”

The University of Bath has one of the leading university sports departments in the UK. Under its Team Bath brand, its success is based on the expertise and dedication of staff, and its excellent facilities, used by the community and Olympic medal winners alike.
