Buccs miss out on indoors promotion

27 January 2010

Team Bath Buccaneers men’s indoor hockey team missed out on promotion to the top flight of the sport when they finished seventh in Division 1.

The team went into a busy weekend with one win and one draw already under their belts – but could only win one and draw one of their remaining six fixtures.

Buccs went down 6-2 to eventual Division 1 winners Canterbury and 4-7 to Bowdon, who went on to finish second overall.  They were also edged out 6-7 by Bournville and scored a 7-5 win over Doncaster in Saturday’s game.

Buccs earned another point on Sunday courtesy of a 6-6 draw against Holcombe, but also went down to Barford Tigers in another one-goal defeat in a game that ended 3-4.

Meanwhile, Buccs under-16 boys were in action at the National Indoor Championships at the weekend – their first appearance in the finals.

The team drew one game and lost three, but were ahead with three minutes remaining in three of the contests.  With five players still eligible next year, the coaching staff are already targeting the competition again in 2011.
