Biography >

Fergus Ryan is studying Sports Performance here at the University of Bath. When he’s not studying, Fergus also races Downhill Mountain Bikes.

He has been competing in the sport since he was 16 and has gone onto reach a European standard that will see him racing at the world’s most difficult courses in the 2014 season.

Fergus aims to compete at senior world cup level for Great Britain by the end of 2017. Alongside these high level events he will also be competing in the British national series and the BUCS downhill championships, representing the University.

From six-years-old Fergus was drawn towards extreme sports including snowboarding, skateboarding and wake-boarding. He said, “I’ve always enjoyed cycling but it wasn’t my first love. Skateboarding was my favourite sport until a friend took me to the local mountain bike tracks where I instantly fell in love with the jumps and speed.”

When at school, downhill became an obsession. Most free weekends were spent going home to race his bike.

Maintaining an interest in other sports, he also played squash at school, which helped with developing components of his aerobic fitness and agility. At 16 Fergus captained his school team during the squash national championships, where they finished fourth.
