Gabb beats Davis Cup player Evans

15 July 2010

Team Bath Tennis Academy player Richard Gabb has created an upset by beating the top seed  in the opening round of the AEGON Pro-Series tournament at Frinton in Essex yesterday (Wednesday).

Eighteen-year-old Gabb knocked British number six and Davis Cup player Dan Evans out of the tournament by beating him 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round of the main draw.

Gabb, who is 10th ranked British junior, faces another Brit, world ranked 648 player Sean Thornley today (Thursday) in the second round. Victory would give the Team Bath Tennis Academy player a place in the quarter-finals of a senior tournament for the first time in his career.

Gabb’s victory over Evans is all the more impressive as he was playing with his old Wilson tennis rackets after his new Wilson rackets were stolen while in Essex.

Two weeks ago Gabb reached the quarter-finals of the boys’ doubles at Junior Wimbledon.
