Clarke misses out on final on Euro indoors debut

07 March 2011

University of Bath-based hurdler Lawrence Clarke just missed out on a place in the 60m hurdles final on his European Indoor Championships debut in Paris at the weekend.

Clarke, who is coached at the Sports Training Village by Malcolm Arnold, UK Athletics national events coach – hurdles, finished fourth in his semi-final.

Despite a decent start, he lost form on the fifth hurdle and stumbled across the line. His time of 7.74 seconds wasn’t quite enough to secure a fastest loser place in the final. He would have needed to run a personal best to progress to the final.

“It was technically ok to hurdle five then it went wrong for no apparent reason,” said Clarke. “I didn’t even hit the hurdle and I’m in much better shape than that. It was a technical error; my trail arm went for a walk in the park .The fastest qualifier was better than my PB – those French boys are quick.”

There was a medal for University of Bath French and Politics graduate Marilyn Okoro. She was a member of the GB 4×400m relay quartet that won silver behind Russia yesterday (Sunday). She also finished fifth in the 800m final.
