Coles retains national under-19 doubles title

University of Bath student Chris Coles retained his men’s doubles title with partner Matt Nottingham at the England National Under-19 Badminton Championships at Milton Keynes.

The pair, who were top seeds, went through the tournament without dropping a game and beat second seeds Harley Towler and Alex Fowler 21-19, 21-16 in a tough final.

Coles, a Sports Performance student at the University, went close in two other competitions, losing his men’s singles semi-final to eventual winner Tony Penty and going out of the mixed doubles at the same stage with partner Jessica Coles.

Coach Education and Sports Development student Panuga Riou, reached the women’s singles final, where she went down 21-11, 21-14 to Sarah Milne. Riou also went out of the women’s doubles at the semi-final stage, going down to eventual winners Jessica Fletcher and Sarah Milne.

Coles and Riou are both supported by Jeff Trendell Scholarships.

Meanwhile, Jess Hopton, a member of the Team Bath Futures squad who also trains once a week at the University of Bath high performance centre, won the girls’ doubles at the Under-15 Nationals partnering Natalie Cham-Lam and was runner-up in the mixed doubles with Marcus Smith.

A week earlier she was runner-up in the girls’ doubles with Lynnlette Aung at the Under-17 Nationals.
