Mantell named as GB hockey reserve for Olympics

09 July 2012

University of Bath graduate Richard Mantell has been named as a reserve for the GB men’s hockey team for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Mantell is one of two reserves who can be added to the GB squad if a current member of the 16-strong squad is ruled out through injury or illness.

Mantell, now 30, graduated from the University with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science in 2004, the year he received a Full Blue at the University.

He was a member of the British team that finished fifth at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games – the best finish by the GB men since winning gold at Seoul in 1988.

He scored twice in the 2009 EuroHockey Nations Championship final when England beat Germany 5-3 to win the European crown for the first time.

Mantell plays for Reading and has made 164 international appearances since his debut in 2003.
