Alan has already collected a series of notable firsts since making the switch from 1500m pool swimming to open water long distance competition in 2003.

In only his first season of open water swimming Alan won the overall European Cup series title, becoming the first Briton to do so. But he had an even more impressive year in 2004. In May he won silver in the 5k open water race at the European Championships in Madrid – becoming the first British European open water medallist. Six months later he became Britain’s first World Championships open water medallist when he won silver over 10k in Dubai.

Alan returned to train at the University of Bath in the summer of 2006 after more than a year training in Germany alongside his partner, fellow open water swimmer Stefanie Biller.

The German swimmer has also moved to Bath and, like Alan, is coached by Andrei Vorontsov. The pair are concentrating their efforts at 10k open water races, which will feature on the swimming programme at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
