Greene to captain GB at Euro Team Champs

07 June 2011

University of Bath-based hurdler Dai Greene said he was surprised and honoured to be asked to captain the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team to compete at the Spar European Team Championships in Sweden this month.

Greene, the 2010 European and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, is coached by UK Athletics national events coach – hurdles, at Team Bath.

The hurdler said: “I was surprised to be asked but I’m really proud take on the role of team captain in Stockholm. It’ll be great to lead by example by hopefully scoring maximum points in the first event.

“Five years ago when I went to the European Championships in Gothenburg I never thought I would be a team captain just a few years later,” he added. “It’s a real honour, especially when there are world champions in the team and other senior figures who could take the role.”

As well as running the 400m hurdles, Greene also features in the GB 4×400 relay team for the championships, which take place on 18 and 19 June.

He is joined in the GB team by University of Bath Sports Performance student Danny Talbot, coached by Danny Cossins, who runs the 200m and is in the 4×100m relay team, as well as by Sport and Exercise Science graduate Craig Pickering, who features in the sprint relay team.
