28 June 2011

Team Bath teenager Toby Martin made a battling junior grand slam debut at Wimbledon before going down to world number 39 Kimmer Coppejans.

The Team Bath MCTA Tennis Academy player, ranked 303 in the junior world rankings, went down 6-4, 6-4 to the more experienced Belgian player in the boys’ singles yesterday (Monday).

Toby had to battle back from two games down in both of the sets.

Barry Scollo, Team Bath’s Director of Tennis, said: “It was Toby’s first experience of playing junior grand slam and he was playing against someone with a lot more experienced at this level.

“It showed when Coppejans served out at 5-4 to win both sets, but it was a great opportunity for Toby to play at a junior grand slam at Wimbledon for the first time.”

Toby returns to action later today partnering Andrew Bettles in the opening round of the boys’ doubles. They face top seeds Oliver Golding (GBR) and Jiri Vesely (CZE).

Meanwhile Beth Askew, playing at her first junior Wimbledon, teams up with Pippa Horn to take on Jesika Maleckova (CZE) and Chantal Skamlova (SVK), the number six seeds in the girls’ doubles.
