Kadeen thrilled by England selection

20 September 2011

Nineteen-year-old University of Bath Sports Performance student Kadeen Corbin is thrilled to have been called into the senior England netball squad for the first time after being selected for the upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand.

“I’m so excited, I can’t wait,” said Kadeen, who plays for Team Bath Toucans and has played just two Fiat Netball Superleague fixtures for Team Bath.

Kadeen is one of five Team Bath players named in England’s 14-strong squad for the southern hemisphere tour alongside Eboni Beckford-Chambers, Gemma Fletcher, Stacey Francis and Serena Guthrie.

Four former Team Bath players, including Kadeen’s sister Sasha, a University of Bath graduate, also feature in the squad.

Despite never having been on tour, Kadeen, who plays goal shooter or goal attack, says she is up for the challenge and hopes that travelling to play the top two teams in the world will be a valuable experience.

Kadeen suffered an injury in 2009 which forced her to drop out of the England under-19 team.  Despite this, she was determined to become an England netball player. She began studying at the University of Bath last year and after a few months she made her Fiat Netball Superleague debut against Glasgow.  “Superleague was a big step up in my career,” she said.

Kadeen is part of the Trendell Family Scholarship, which helps with funding for young athletes in order to pay for transport and equipment.

Kadeen’s sporting idols are her mum, who played netball for Middlesex County, her sister, who has also played for both Team Bath and England, and Pamela Cookey, who is the current Team Bath Superleague captain and also plays as a GA and GS.

After a gruelling twenty-six hour flight with a transfer in Hong Kong, the England team will play two tests against Commonwealth champions New Zealand followed by  three tests against world champions Australia.

England fly out to New Zealand on Monday (26 September). Fixtures are:

Test 1 v New Zealand, Monday 3 October – Auckland
