Charteris heartbroken as Wales miss out on final

17 October 2011

University of Bath graduate Luke Charteris said it was heartbreaking for his Wales side to miss out on a place in the IRB World Cup final.

Wales went down 9-8 to France in Saturday’s semi-final in Auckland, just missing out on a berth in the final for the first time in their history.

Charteris, who graduated from the University with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science in 2005, said: “We came to the World Cup honestly believing we could win it. It’s not to be now and the boys are devastated. It’s heartbreaking.”

Charteris, who plays lock for Wales and Newport Gwent Dragons, has featured in five of Wales’ six World Cup games to date. The team now face a third-place play-off against Australia on Friday (21 October).

The University of Bath is The Sunday Times ‘University of the Year’ 2011/2012.
