13 November 2011

Fixture: Team Bath Buccaneers v Guildford

Date and Time: Sunday 13 November, 13:00

Score: Team Bath Buccaneers 5 – Guildford 0

Venue: Sports Training Village, University of Bath

Team Bath Buccaneers produced their best performance of the season on Sunday, defeating Guildford 5-0 at the Sports Training Village.

Buccs combined ruthless attacking with solid defending to comfortably see off their Surrey opponents.

Guildford went into the game on the back of an impressive win over Havant and so Buccs knew they had to be at their best to upset the visitors.

The home team started the better side but allowed former Buccs player Johnny Haynes the chance to put his side a goal up early on but keeper Bailey was alert to deny him.

Buccs went close on a number of occasions before eventually taking the lead in the 23rd minute.

Johnny Kinder fired home from a penalty corner break down to give his side a well-deserved 1-0 lead.

The lead was then doubled with some fine work from Shaun Matthews and Ed Matts setting up Phil Ball who fired home his first goal of the season.

It was much of the same in the second half with Buccs continuing to dominate.

In the closing 15 minutes Buccs really turned on the style, scoring three times to leave Guildford on the end of a big defeat.

First, captain Matt Ruxton finished superbly from a penalty corner after Rufus McNaught-Barrington’s initial effort was cleared off the line.

Five minutes later and some more excellent work from Matthews led to Richard Bendry deflecting home Buccs’ fourth, and his 50th goal for the club.

The performance was sewn up with three minutes remaining when Tim Davenport flicked home from a penalty corner to give Buccs their sixth consecutive win in the West Conference.

Elsewhere in the division, Havant defeated Birmingham University 2-0 which meant that Buccs finished the weekend top of the league, a point ahead of the Midlands side who they visit next weekend.

Buccs will hope to extend their lead in the table by registering their seventh win in a row next Saturday.
