The first half of the season for the University of Bath rugby team could not have gone better, so it was important to carry on their winning ways in their first outing of 2012.

Playing on a Sunday afternoon, the squad arrived at the home of Bristol Harlequins to partake in quarter final match in the Somerset Cup. Going into the game the whole squad understood the different challenges that they would face playing adult rugby compared to university rugby.

From the off, it was clear to win this game the side had to play free, running rugby to move the older team around and tire them out.

However in the first half and the beginning of the second half, the game was played in close quarters playing into the hands of the opposition who seemed to revel in this sort of rugby.

The home side had a strong set of forwards who enjoyed the tight game and had a good set piece, particularly the scrum.

Eventually, the fitness of both sides had a huge impact on the game.

For Bristol Harlequins, they began to tire and they had to make a few substitutions that seemed to disrupt their momentum, whereas Bath’s fitness meant they were able to turn up the heat on the opposition and run away with the game towards the end of the match.

At the end of the game, the side all agreed that there were both positives and negatives to take away from the game with lessons being learnt about the craft of adult rugby.

The side felt that it was good that they carried on the winning ways and also felt it was important to get their first game under the belt after Christmas before the really tough challenges start in the shape of knock out rugby.

The 1st XV face Swansea next week in a must win game to progress further into the BUCS knockout competition whilst the 2nd XV have a week off in wait of the challenge of maintaining top of the table in their league.

Exciting times ahead for all involved in the University of Bath rugby squad.
