Fixture: Guildford v Team Bath Buccaneers
Date and time: Sunday 11 March 2012
Score: Guildford 1-2 Team Bath
Venue: Broadwater School, Guildford
A depleted Team Bath Buccaneers squad recorded their fourteenth consecutive win on Sunday with a 2-1 win at Guildford.
Buccs, crowned West Conference champions last weekend travelled to Surrey without a number of key individuals who missed out due to a combination of injuries and illness.
This didn’t prevent Jody Paul’s side putting in a match-winning performance against a team well-known for their defensive qualities.
However Buccs were made to wait until the second half before being able to make their mark on the game.
An even first half saw chances for both sides, with Buccs, through Phil Ball and Tim Davenport, probably feeling they had the better efforts to take the lead.
And it was those two players who were on hand to contribute to their side’s win with a goal each within two minutes of each other midway through the second half.
Firstly Davenport flicked home a penalty corner in the 47th minute after a number of unsuccessful attempts, and then Ball coolly converted a penalty stroke after Ed Matts was deliberately fouled in the circle.
Guildford, needing a route back into the game, then began to enjoy greater spells of possession and Buccs had to work hard to contain their opponents.
Buccs defended superbly to deny Guildford a lifeline, with Tim Atkins in particular producing a committed defensive display.
The hosts did eventually get a consolation goal when Rory Marsh slotted home a penalty stroke with seven minutes to go, but Buccs held on to complete another fine win.
Next up for Buccs is Birmingham University at the STV on Saturday 17 March, when the squad will be presented with the West Conference league trophy.
