Teenager triumphs in Bath tennis tournament
Czech player Tereza Smitkova and Germany’s Peter Torebko took the honours in the singles competitions at the AEGON GB Pro-Series Bath tennis tournament at the University of Bath at the weekend.
Seventeen-year-old Smitkova came from a set down to beat number five seed Katarzyna Piter in the women’s singles final 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 of the ITF Pro-Circuit $10,000. It was a particularly impressive performance as Smitkova had to battle her way through the qualifying rounds before tackling the main draw.
Torebko was seeded two for the tournament and beat number four seed Michael Ryderstedt from Sweden 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the men’s ITF Pro Circuit $15,000 tournament at the Sports Training Village.
With the first week of action in the back-to-back tournaments complete, attention has now turned to the second week, with the men’s €42,500 ATP Challenger Tour competition is the highlight of the action.
Germany’s Andreas Beck and Michael Berrer, ranked 96 and 116 in the world respectively, are number one and two seeds for the men’s singles. The main draw gets underway today (Monday). The women’s singles qualifying round in the $25,000 ITF Pro-Circuit event takes place today.
The action is FREE to watch throughout the two weeks of tennis.
