Fixture: Whitchurch v Team Bath Buccaneers
Date: Sunday 25 March 2012
Venue: Welsh Institute of Sport (Cardiff)
Team Bath Buccaneers were unable to finish their West Conference campaign with a win, drawing 3-3 at Whitchurch on Sunday.
Buccs travelled to Cardiff without a number of players, ruled out through injury, but started the better side and took the lead in the seventh minute. Former Whitchurch player Jack Betenson showed great skill to receive on the baseline and feed Rob Wilson for his first goal of the season.
Buccs held the lead until the stroke of half time when Joe Naughalty finally got the better of Buccs’ keeper James Bailey with a penalty corner drag flick.
Two minutes into the second half and Buccs were ahead again. Phil Ball showed fantastic technique to lob the ball over the advancing Whitchurch keeper following a long aerial pass from Tim Davenport.
The hosts then rallied and scored twice within four minutes to seemingly take the game away from Buccs. First Dewi Roblin converted a penalty stroke and then Rupert Shipperley finished well, deflecting home a cross in the 48th minute.
Buccs then upped their game as they looked for a way back into the match. Davenport found an equaliser in the 52nd minute after some good work by Tim Atkins to set up an exciting final period.
Buccs searched and searched but were unable to find a winning goal, ending their run of 15 straight victories in the division.
Buccs will be hoping to rediscover their winning form when they take on Canterbury in the first of their play-off matches at Bisham Abbey on Saturday 31 March.
