Fixture: Team Bath Buccaneers v Exeter University & Brooklands MU
Date: Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 April 2012
Score: 0-6 & 2-2
Venue: Cannock Sports Club
Team Bath Buccaneers missed out on promotion to hockey’s top flight this weekend, losing their opening fixture to Exeter University at the Play-Offs in Cannock.
In what was a must win fixture for both teams, Buccs struggled to get a grip on the match and found themselves 4-0 down at the break after goals from James Royce and a nine minute hat-trick from Tom Carson.
Brendon Noble and Gareth Davies added two further goals to Exeter’s tally in the second half to leave Buccs on the end of a somewhat embarrassing 6-0 defeat.
With promotion out of the question, Buccs went into their final game of the weekend against Brooklands hoping to restore some pride, and to some extent they managed to do this.
Coming from 2-0 down, goals from Lewis Prosser and Johnny Kinder ensured that Buccs held the team from the North Conference who ended up topping the table having earlier defeated both Exeter and Canterbury.
It was a disappointing end to the season for Buccs who dominated the West Conference. They will hope to make the Play-Offs again next season where they will look to bridge the clear gap in standard that currently lies between them and a place in the Premier League.
Buccs will be without the services of Richard Bendry next season who announced his retirement from hockey at the end of the Play-Off weekend.
Bendry has been a fantastic servant for the Buccaneers and hangs up his stick after 15 seasons at the club.
