University footballers are BUCS champions

04 May 2012

The University of Bath men’s first XI are celebrating winning the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Mars Football Championship title for the first time for 11 years.

The team beat Stirling University 2-0 in the championship final at Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park Ground courtesy of goals from Craig Mullen and Robin Nicholls.

Sports Performance student Mullen broke the deadline on the 19th minute with a sublime lob over the Stirling keeper.

On 76 minutes Hector Mackie, a half-time sub, put Robin Nicholls through one-on-one on the keeper and he calmly slotted home to double the lead and secure the title.

“It was quite a close game and it was great to win it,” said Lee Smith, who is in his first season as Head of Football at the University of Bath.

“The squad have improved and matured as a group in their last four performances and their work rate has been fantastic,” he added. “Quite a few of the players are third year students, so it’s a great way for them to go out.”

Three members of the squad, Hector Mackie, Noah Keats and Simon Dunn, also recently featured for the England Universities team at the BUCS Home Nations.

The team for the BUCS final was: Austin Byfield, Steve Hunt, Scott Dixon, Noah Keats, Michael Wright, Jonjo O’Hara (capt), Tim Piotrowski, Robins Nicholls, Simon Dunn, Craig Mullen, Tom Andrews. Subs: Hector Mackie, Ruaridh Kay, Gordon Rieck, Liam Knight, Mike Bawn.
