Lisa takes step closer to Wimbledon

19 June 2012

Team Bath-MCTA tennis player Lisa Whybourn was the only British winner at Wimbledon qualifying with a hard fought 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Sarah Gronert (Ger).

Head Coach David Sammel said “Lisa has had a solid month and won 8/12 matches but naturally to take a small step towards Wimbledon is pleasing. Her lead coach Ian Macdonald ‘Macca’ has done a superb job and Lisa is a tougher player due to his work and that of Alex Cockram (physical trainer) and Katie Williams (physic).”

Sam Murray almost pulled off an upset against former world number 21 Giselle Dulko losing 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Sam is a class player who was the third  fastest climber in the world last year and is progressing steadily up the rankings. Spanish number 11 seed Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino (Spain) was too consistent for an out of sorts Melanie South 3-6, 2-6.

“Both Sam and Mel are bitterly disappointed given the quality match Sam played going a break up in the third and the form Mel showed last week in Birmingham. Team Bath-MCTA is going in the right direction and an exciting place for tennis players of all ages to train with these three girls leading the way” reported David

Sam Murray and Emily Webley-Smith begin their quest to qualify for the doubles with Mel South already in Wimbledon with Tara Moore.
