Rhythmic gymnastics group selected for London 2012

04 July 2012

Six University of Bath-based gymnasts will make history when they become the first team to represent Great Britain in the rhythmic gymnastics group competition at an Olympic Games.

Georgina Cassar, Jade Faulkner, Frankie Fox, Lynne Hutchison, Louisa Pouli and Rachel Smith were today (Wednesday) named in the Team GB team for the London 2012 Olympics.

The group have been training together at the University of Bath for over a year. They will finalise their training for the Games at a preparation camp at the University in the immediate lead-up to the Games.

Eighteen-year-old Georgina Cassar will also make a piece of history by becoming the first Gibraltarian to compete at an Olympic Games.

Nineteen-year-old Rachel Smith said:  “As a group we have worked so hard to make it to the Olympics and have been through all the emotions along the way. I think in the end this has only made us all appreciate it even more.

“I can’t wait to represent our country and to do ourselves proud. I am so excited for the Olympic Games and I find myself counting down the days until we compete. We hope to put on a good show and to repay everything which everyone has done for us.”

Sarah Moon, the group’s coach, said: “The girls have done a wonderful job to qualify for the Games and I’m really proud for them.

“They have made huge leaps and bounds in the last 12 months. We’re ready and raring to go. The group are proud and honoured to have their Team GB kit and to be part of the British team.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has supposed us along the way, including everyone at the University of Bath.”
